Scout Duck: 002

Scout Duck: 002 Brunel University, Uxbridge. Scout Duck: 002 is in the care of inventor Professor Heinz Wolff! Known for his passion for science and practical jokes Professor Heinz Wolff has a tremendous gift for inventing and encouraging others to learn. He is fondly remembered in the United Kingdom for presenting shows such as The Great Egg Race, Young Scientists of the Year and Great Experiments Which Changed the World but he holds numerous other achievements! He qualified in physiology and physics in 1954. Subsequently, whilst with the medical research council, he chose to work on the interface between engineering and the biological sciences, calling himself a bioengineer, thus giving a name to the new discipline. He became head of the divisions of bioengineering at the national institute for medical research and subsequently at the clinical research centre. He was made an honorary member of the European Space Agency in 1975, for which he was chair for the Advisory committee looking at the uses of micro-gravity for scientific research. He was also scientific director and co-founder of Project Juno, the private British-Soviet joint venture that sent Helen Sharman to the Mir space station, which saw Helen Sharman become Britain's first astronaut in 1991. In 1992 he was recipient of the Edinburgh medal, awarded in recognition of an outstanding contribution by a scientist to society.
He founded The Brunel Institute for Bioengineering (BIB) in 1983 a multidisciplinary innovative research and development organisation, which is now closely aligned to the School of Engineering and Design. The Institute has developed from a renowned space research facility into an organisation with a multi-purpose Laboratory, which the Professor retains, devoted to his research projects. Over the years they have developed instruments used for biological research in the weightless environment of orbiting spacecraft and Tools for Living, i.e. the use of technology of all kinds to improve the quality of life of elderly people. In one instance the conversion of three-wheel BMW bubble car to run on electricity as a prototype for a new mode of transport for older people.
Having long admired the Professor’s work and achievements over the years I was delighted to see how Scout Duck 002 was getting on. I thank the Professor and Maura Donnelly for their time and kindness in helping with this project. It’s good to know that Scout Duck: 002 is in safe hands!

Scout Duck: 024 San Antonio, Texas USA. This is simply marvellous 2012 has been the best year for duck reports and with only 19 days of 2012 to go another duck has reported back!
Scout Duck 024 e-mailed to let me know that he now resides with one Mr. “Dinosaur George” Blasing of San Antonio, Texas! Dinosaur George is a self taught palaeontologist and animal behaviourist with more than 35 years of study and research. Blasing is a writer, television personality and lecturer, lecturing in over 2800 schools, museums and public events. For the past 15 years he has taught the wonders of prehistoric life to elementary and middle schools all over America. Scout Duck 024 joined him on his latest program, Museum in the Classroom, where George actually brings an entire museum to the school! This is one of the largest travelling prehistoric exhibits in North America and an absolutely wonderful idea as it allows students to experience a magnificent museum quality exhibition without having to leave the campus. I thank him for his time and for joining in my venture and congratulate him on doing a magnificent job bringing this wonderful subject into the schools, maintaining children’s interests and answering our future palaeontologist questions! Please click on the link and check out his amazing work and support his projects just as he supported mine.

Apparently attends the annual 4-day bestival music festival that they have down there. Seems he also meet renowned aviation and marine artist Mr Ivan Berryman. Mr Berryman lives in Ryde and has been a professional artist for some thirty-five years much of his work commissioned by people who have served on or flown in military that request specific events in aviation history.  Despite being better known for his military pictures Mr Berryman also paints fantasy art under the pseudonym of Heller.  Check out his web site for further information on his amazing work.  My thanks to Mr Berryman for his time and my sincerest thanks to 029’s guardian Wendy.

The appropriately numbered 013 was almost written off as a ‘lost duck’! Discovered in Lincoln in 2009 by Rachel and Andy who realised on their return home to Rogiet that 013 was not in their luggage! A frantic call to the B&B proved fruitless despite the staff searching the premises for him he was gone. That was until a year later when Rachel packed for a return trip to Lincoln only to rediscover 013 inside her boot! So here he is the Scout Duck that lived in a boot for a year! I’m pleased to say that he now lives on their living room windowsill.

Whenever a Scout Duck reports back I write a project update. The updates usually provide a little information on the Scout Duck’s whereabouts sometimes mention the contributor that kindly took the time to photograph the duck and report back to me. This is not always possible however as some contributors like to remain ‘anonymous’ sometimes only providing the location. In some cases the duck has been photographed at the very spot they were discovered in other cases they find themselves in completely new locations. Either way their submissions are just as important!
